Congratulations to Justin

Justin DinermanJustin Dinerman, our property manager and leasing agent, received this week the real estate industry’s designation, CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Manager). This is a very noteworthy accomplishment. The designation is awarded after the applicant has successfully completed five grueling one-week courses in various disciplines of commercial real estate. He then must pass oral and written exams administered by the CCIM governing body in Chicago.

The CCIM award follows Justin’s earlier achievement in attaining the Certified Property Manager (CPM), an equally laudable degree.

Undoubtedly these degrees represent more than lapel pins and framed paper on the wall. Of course, the knowledge gained from the work should help him in the financial and managerial aspects of his career. The effort and discipline required to reach these goals will propel him in his work effort as well.

More important than the practical aspects of these endeavors is the continuing focus on augmenting his education in a multiplicity of intellectual pursuits.

My paternal grandparents immigrated to the US in the late 19th century to escape Cossacks who would ride on horseback into villages murdering and pillaging. After those experiences, my grandmother would say that people could take your home, money and food but could not take what was in your head!

This philosophy of the patriarchs of the family not only encouraging but demanding that their progeny focus their energy on education may be the nucleus that makes different ethnic groups like cotemporary Indians and Orientals attain a stereotypical image of scholastic prowess. It is what Aristotle chose to include in his trilogy of man attempting to attain perfection: intellectual success along with spiritual and physical superiority.

Some critics of our contemporary youth argue they have become mentally (and physically) lazy. Our kids try to get into the easier courses in school fearing the work and effort required by the sciences and math. Rather than hustle the 6 year old from dance to soccer to McDonalds, perhaps today’s parent should initiate the young child to more intellectual pursuits in addition to adequate exercise. This effort may prepare the young and curious for the discipline required to do well in more difficult classes.

Congratulations to Justin for increasing his knowledge to become a better professional and individual.
